A Magical Weekend in Paris with the Kids: Our Family Adventure

When you think of Paris, images of romance, fine dining, and chic boutiques come to mind. But what you might not think is how family-friendly this vibrant city can be. From iconic landmarks to unique experiences, Paris is the perfect place for a weekend away with the kids.

We decided to whisk the kids (6 & 10 years old) away for a family adventure in Paris, and it turned out to be one of our most memorable getaways. We explored some of the famous sights and enjoyed some surprisingly kid-friendly experiences. Here’s a breakdown of our fun-filled weekend in Paris!

Trip Date – 13-15th September 2024.

Getting There: Eurostar Upgrade to Standard Premier

Our adventure began the moment we boarded the Eurostar. Travelling to Paris from London by train is not only convenient, but it also makes for a relaxing journey. We upgraded to our tickets to Standard Premier. Now, I know what you’re thinking—why the upgrade? Trust me, with kids, the extra comfort is well worth it.

In Standard Premier, the seats are wider, and the carriage feels less cramped. The kids loved the large windows for watching the countryside whiz by. I loved the quieter, calmer atmosphere of the carriage. You’re also treated to a light meal during the journey. While it’s not a full-on dining experience, it’s more than just a snack. The journey flew by, and we arrived in the city relaxed and ready to explore.

Our Stay: Hotel du Collectionneur Paris – The Perfect 5-Star Base

For our two nights in Paris, we stayed at the Hôtel du Collectionneur Paris. Located in the chic 8th arrondissement, the hotel has an art deco vibe. It adds a touch of Parisian elegance to your stay. As soon as we arrived, the kids were taken with the décor. There are gold accents, luxurious furniture, and beautiful artwork. It felt like we were stepping into a different era.

What made this hotel especially great for our family was how welcoming it was. A quick check-in, then straight up to the room. Although we weren’t in Paris for long, we wanted to be comfortable and safe with the children. From the friendly staff to the little touches in the room, everything was designed to make sure families felt at home.

The real highlight for the kids was the breakfast. Each morning, we headed down to a buffet that catered to every taste. There were freshly baked croissants (of course, we’re in Paris!), a variety of fruits, cereals, and even pancakes, which quickly became the kids’ favourite. The hotel staff were brilliant, too, always making sure the kids had everything they needed. It set us up perfectly for a day of exploring.

Saturday Morning: Exploring the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen

On our first full day, we decided to do something a little different. We took a short taxi ride to visit the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen. It’s one of the largest flea markets in the world. While it might not seem like the most obvious choice for a family day out, we found it fascinating. Any fans of the show ‘Emily in Paris’, will have seen the market feature in episode five of the fourth season.

The market is huge, with everything from antique furniture and vintage clothing to quirky jewellery and rare finds. We even stumbled upon a shop selling preloved vintage Chanel handbags. Yes, it took every ounce of willpower not to buy anything. The kids had a great time pointing out unusual items on the stalls. it was a fantastic way to introduce them to Parisian culture beyond the usual tourist spots.

One of the things I loved most about the market was its atmosphere. It felt like a real local experience. It was definitely less polished than the city centre but full of character. For families, I’d recommend setting aside a couple of hours to wander the stalls—it’s a great way to spend a leisurely morning.

Lunch at Forest, Museum of Modern Art

On Saturday afternoon, we took a break from sightseeing to enjoy a relaxed lunch at Forest. It’s a beautiful restaurant located within the Museum of Modern Art. The setting is gorgeous, with a cool, modern vibe that’s very stylish. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy high-quality food without feeling out of place with kids.

The menu had something for everyone. We ordered a mix of fresh salads, meats, prawns, schnitzel and tasty dishes that the kids loved. After lunch, we took a stroll through the contemporary art museum. While some of the exhibits might be a bit abstract for younger children, there are plenty of outdoor spaces for them to explore.

Of course, we had to try the Cocktails and the kids had Mocktails 😊

The Eiffel Tower: A Double Visit for Double the Magic

Of course, no trip to Paris is complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. It’s the ultimate symbol of the city. Seeing it through the eyes of the kids was even more special. We decided to visit it twice—once during the day and again at night.

During the daytime, the tower stands tall against the sky. It offers breathtaking views from the top. We didn’t go up this time, due to us not having enough time to queue. We however, spend plenty of time at the base of the tower, letting the kids run around. If you have little ones with you, this is a great spot for them to burn off some energy while you take in the iconic view.

But the real magic happens at night. After dinner, we headed back to the Eiffel Tower to see it lit up. Every evening, on the hour, for five minutes, the tower sparkles with thousands of twinkling lights. It’s truly a sight to behold. The kids were mesmerised, and honestly, so were we. It’s one of those moments that feels almost surreal. Standing there as a family, watching one of the world’s most famous landmarks come alive with light.

Dinner and a Show: Paradise Latin

On Saturday night, we decided to do something a bit out of the ordinary. We all went to see the famous Paradise Latin show. Now, I’ll admit, this one was a bit of a gamble. The show is a classic Parisian cabaret for ages of 6+. While it’s known for its incredible performances, it’s also a little risqué. That said, we’ve always been open with our kids about the human body, and we felt comfortable taking them to see it.

The performance was nothing short of spectacular. There was singing, dancing, acrobatics, and plenty of glitz and glamour. The costumes were dazzling, and the choreography was top-notch. The kids were completely enthralled. I’ve seen a lot of cabaret in London and this was on another level. While there were a few moments that were a bit cheeky, we felt it was all done in good taste. The overall experience was unforgettable.

Dinner was served alongside the show, and it was delicious. We all opted for the veil wellington. The food, much like the performance, was full of flair and flavour. It was definitely a night to remember! Of course there were bottles of bubbles for the adults.

Final Thoughts: Paris is Perfect for Families

Our weekend in Paris was a whirlwind of activity. We had limited time but it was also one of the most rewarding trips we’ve had as a family. Whether it was the kids marvelling at the Eiffel Tower, exploring quirky market stalls, or enjoying a dazzling show, there was something for everyone.

If you’re thinking about a family trip to Paris, I’d say go for it. The city has so much to offer, and you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. From cultural experiences to iconic sights, Paris truly is a magical destination for kids and parents alike.
